Dirty air ducts can also have a negative impact on the health of your system. As debris and gunk build up over time, then it becomes more difficult for your air conditioning system to work efficiently.
1. Dirty air ducts reduce air flow
Air conditioning ducts work by forcing air through the ductwork to reach its destination. To do this properly there needs to be nothing in the way and even apparently mild coating of dust or debris can impede airflow.
2. Dirty air ducts can increase strain on your air conditioning unit.
If your ducts are dirty, then your air conditioning unit has to work even harder to keep the air cool and comfortable. Air conditioning recycles the same air. This means it picks up dust and other elements from the air both inside and outside the duct. These particles end up stuck in the filter which again impedes the airflow and means your unit has to work extra hard. It can become more difficult for the system to do its job of maintaining a constant temperature to keep your home safe and comfortable.
Dirty air ducts can make you sick or cause existing health problems to get worse, which is why regular ductwork remediation and treatment are essential. If you live or work with older people, or if you have children, then it’s especially important to keep your ductwork clean and clear from harmful pathogens.
Conditions such as asthma and allergies can be made much worse by dirty air ducts. The allergens that cause the problem can be circulated throughout the home, which will trigger longer more intense attacks,

People with these conditions can experience more intense symptoms and longer periods of severe illness if air ducts are not cleaned regularly.

This type of infection can develop into a more serious illness, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
Sinus infections are very painful. They are caused by bacteria, and these can be circulated through your home or office by your air conditioning ducts.
Whilst the common cold can be a mild illness, it can be very unpleasant and cause notable discomfort.
Mould and mildew can cause skin problems. Conditions such as eczema or hives can be inflamed by particles of mould or mildew circulated by dirty ductwork.
Being in a continual fight against bacteria will take its toll on your body. Whilst bacteria are naturally present in our everyday lives, the artificial environment of air conditioning ductwork allows these bacteria to multiply to abnormal levels.
If you or members of your family are frequently feeling run-down or tired, or simply “not quite right” then it could be a sign that your ductwork needs remediation.
While dust and debris pose a risk to your air conditioning system, the real threat to air quality comes from the mould, mildew, and bacteria that a build-up of dust and debris can harbour. At e-hygiene services we offer a range of treatment programmes that can reduce the build-up of these harmful bacteria.
We use specially designed fungicides and bactericides that won’t release any harmful chemicals and can prevent microbe build-up for up to ten years. You’ll still need to have your air conditioning unit cleaned regularly to ensure optimum system performance, but the risk of causing or exacerbating long-term health problems is reduced.
Air conditioning systems and ductwork are regulated by various Australian standards. As a home or business owner, your primary responsibility is found in AS/NZS 3666.3.2011. This concerns the remediation and treatment of air conditioning ducts. As a homeowner or business owner, you are obliged to have your air conditioning ducts inspected at least once a year. It is likely that this inspection will show that some remediation or treatment is needed.
It’s easy to understand what poor air quality means outdoors – pollution can be felt on your skin, in your hair and even seen if it’s extreme. Poor air quality indoors is less obvious, but just as damaging. Because your air conditioning system uses recycled air, any contaminants in the home can end up in the ductwork, where they can grow and end up being forced out into the home, which reduces the air quality.
As well as regular ductwork remediation and treatment, things like adding plants to your home and keeping on top of the cleaning will help maintain good air quality.
This depends on the size of the system. We’d expect an average home to take between two and four hours to clean and treat. You can stay in your home or workplace during air duct remediation and treatment, but you may prefer not to. The process can be noisy, making it difficult to concentrate on work or to relax. We’ll try to keep disruption to a minimum, but we may ask you to move anything we think may be damaged or may simply be in the way of the equipment. We can talk to you about this during our initial inspection visit.
